The 4 best bill splitting apps in 2026

PayUpp, Tricount, Splitwise and Splid compared: what each bill splitting app gives you free, who needs the app, and which one suits your group.

The best bill splitting app is the one your friends will actually use. In 2026 the short list is PayUpp, Tricount, Splitwise and Splid. Each suits a different group. Pick PayUpp if your friends won't install anything, Tricount if you want everything free, Splitwise if you're happy to pay for a subscription, and Splid if you want to start without signing up. Below we compare what each one does for free, who needs the app, and how you get your money back.

We make PayUpp, so we have tried hard to be fair. Every claim about the other three comes from their own official pages as of September 2026. Where a page does not list a feature, we say "not listed" rather than guess.

What makes a good bill splitting app?

Whether you want the best app for splitting bills after one dinner or a split expenses app to run a shared flat, the same five questions decide it.

  • How much is free? Some apps cap what you can add on the free plan, or keep receipt scanning and currencies behind a subscription. Check before the whole group commits.
  • Do your friends need the app? The organiser is always keen. The friend who came to one dinner is not. Every extra download or sign-up is another day you wait to be paid.
  • Can it read a receipt? Typing a long bill line by line is where splitting goes wrong. Scanning saves the typing, and picking items per person keeps it fair when someone only had a salad.
  • Does it handle currencies? On a trip abroad you want conversion built in, not a calculator on the side.
  • How do you get paid? A balance is only half the job. The app should make it easy to pay the person who is owed, in whatever way your group already pays each other.

Keep those five in mind. Each app below wins on some of them and asks something of you on others.

PayUpp: best when your friends won't install anything

Best for: dinners and nights out where the group chat is the only thing everyone shares.

PayUpp is built around one idea: the person who paid should not have to chase anyone. With a quick split you send a link to the group chat. Friends open it, see their share and pay you. They need no account, no install and no bank connection. Quick splits are free and unlimited.

When the bill is complicated, scan the receipt. One photo, and every item lands in the list, ready to check. In a quick split, choose "Let everyone pick" and each friend taps what they had from the link. In an ongoing group, whoever paid assigns the items. Shared items are split among the people who shared them, and the split is exact to the cent. When the bill is simple, split it evenly: enter the total and add your friends. You can also split by exact amounts, percentages or shares.

PayUpp never holds your money. People pay you in their own banking or payment app using your payment details, whether that is Revolut, Wise, PayPal, a bank transfer, Bizum, Pix, Venmo or Zelle.

For a group that keeps going, such as a flat or a long trip, every change is visible to everyone, and balances say in plain words who owes what. "Simplify group debts" shows the fewest payments that clear the group. Currency conversion, spreadsheet (CSV) export and automated, customisable payment reminders are all free. There are no ads, ever, and we do not sell your data.

Honest limits:

  • The free plan gives you one ongoing group with every feature, plus unlimited quick splits. A second ongoing group needs PayUpp Pro: a one-time 9.99 (USD or EUR), no subscription. See pricing.
  • PayUpp works today in the browser at app.payupp.fun. The iPhone and Android apps are coming, and you can join the waitlist.
  • Payments happen in each person's own app, not inside PayUpp. That is on purpose, but it means PayUpp tells everyone who owes what rather than moving the money itself.

Tricount: best free app for trips and currencies

Best for: groups where everyone is happy to use the app and nobody wants to pay for anything.

Tricount is free with no monthly fees. Its Premium tier has been discontinued, and the app is linked to bunq banking. As of September 2026 it advertises unlimited expenses and free currency conversion, which makes it a strong choice for a trip abroad. If your group already uses it and it works, that is a good reason to stay.

Honest limits (as of September 2026):

  • Everyone in the group uses the Tricount app.
  • Its pages describe attaching a receipt photo for reference. Automatic scanning and picking items per person are not listed.
  • Spreadsheet export is on request through support.
  • Its pages describe manual payment requests.

We put the two side by side in more detail in our Tricount alternative guide.

Splitwise: best if your group will pay for Pro

Best for: groups where everyone already has an account and someone is happy to subscribe.

Splitwise has a free plan and a Pro subscription. The free CSV export on the web is a genuine plus: you can take your data out without paying. With Pro you get automatic receipt scanning, picking items per person, currency conversion, no daily expense limit and no ads. If your group already runs its shared costs in Splitwise and pays for Pro, it covers a lot of ground.

Honest limits (as of September 2026):

  • Everyone needs a Splitwise account.
  • The free plan limits how many expenses you can add each day, and it shows ads.
  • Receipt scanning, item picking and currency conversion are Pro features, and Pro is a subscription.
  • Reminders are monthly summary emails and manual reminders.

If you are weighing up apps like Splitwise, our Splitwise alternative guide goes through it feature by feature.

Splid: best for a quick group with no sign-up

Best for: a small group that wants to start straight away without anyone creating an account.

Splid is a free app, and its groups work without signup, which removes one of the biggest hurdles for the less organised friend. Currency conversion is free too, and no daily expense cap is published.

Honest limits (as of September 2026):

  • Everyone in the group uses the Splid app.
  • More groups and Excel export are in-app purchases.
  • Receipt scanning, picking items per person and reminders are not listed on its official pages.

Which one should you pick?

The table tells you what each app does. Your situation tells you which of those things matter.

One dinner out

PayUpp. A quick split turns the bill into a link, and friends pay you without installing anything. If people ordered different things, scan the receipt and let everyone tap what they had. Splitwise Pro can also scan receipts and split by item, but everyone needs an account first. For more on the maths at the table, read how to split a restaurant bill.

A trip abroad

Currency conversion is free in PayUpp, Tricount and Splid, and a Pro feature in Splitwise. If the trip is your one ongoing PayUpp group, the free plan covers it, and "Simplify group debts" settles everything in the fewest payments at the end. If your free group is already your flat, Tricount does trips for free, or PayUpp Pro adds unlimited groups for 9.99 once. Our guide to splitting travel expenses with friends walks through a whole trip.

Flatmates

A flat never really ends, so reminders and clear balances matter more than anything else. PayUpp's one free ongoing group suits it well: reminders are automated and customisable, and the balance says in plain words who owes what. Tricount is free with unlimited expenses, and its pages describe manual payment requests. On Splitwise's free plan, keep the daily expense limit in mind for a busy household.

Couples

Many couples split some costs unevenly, say 60/40 on the rent. PayUpp can split by percentages or shares, so nobody does the maths by hand, and a couple fits comfortably in the one free ongoing group. If you both already use Tricount, it is free as well.

Bottom line

There is no single best app for splitting bills, only the best one for your group. If everyone is happy to use an app and you want everything free, Tricount is a strong pick. If your group already lives in Splitwise and pays for Pro, it does the job. Splid is the quickest start with no sign-up. And if you want friends to pay you from a link, with receipt scanning and item picking included free, try PayUpp in your browser.
