      How the rent is split

Rent pays for two things: the room each person keeps to themselves, and the space everyone shares, like the kitchen, the living room and the hallway.

      1. The shared-space part of the rent is split per person, because everyone uses the kitchen the same. A couple in one room counts as two people.
      2. The rest is split by room size. A private bathroom counts as 50 ft² (5 m²) of extra room.
      3. Move the shared-space slider to fit your place. A big living room and small bedrooms mean a bigger shared part.

Prefer another rule? Split by income, so everyone pays the same share of what they earn, or split equally.

      Example: three roommates, $2,400 rent

Rocco has the biggest room, 170 ft², with a private bathroom. Ana's room is 130 ft² and Luis's is 100 ft². Half the rent pays for the shared space.

The shared half, $1,200.00, is split three ways: $400.00 each. The other $1,200.00 is split by room size, with Rocco's bathroom counted as 50 ft² more. In total, Rocco pays $986.67, Ana pays $746.67 and Luis pays $666.66.

      Questions people ask

Is it fair to split rent by room size?

Usually, yes. A bigger room is worth more to the person who has it. But the kitchen and the living room are shared equally, so a fair split charges part of the rent per person and part by room size. That is how this calculator works.

How do you split rent with a couple?

Tick Couple in this room. The couple pays for their room once, but pays two shares of the shared space, because two people use the kitchen and the living room.

How much more should a room with a private bathroom pay?

There is no single rule. This calculator counts a private bathroom as 50 ft² (5 m²) of extra private space, about the size of a small bathroom. Change the room size if you want to weigh it differently.

How do you split rent by income?

Add up everyone's income. Each person pays the same share of the rent as their share of the total income. Choose Income in the calculator to do this.

What about bills like electricity and internet?

Most households split them equally, because everyone uses them. Keep them in a PayUpp group with the rent and the groceries, and everyone always sees who owes what.

Does the calculator save my numbers?

No. The math runs in your browser, and nothing you type leaves your device or is stored.
