How the split works
- Enter the bill total from the receipt.
- Pick a tip. It is added on top of the bill.
- Set the number of people. When the cents do not divide evenly, a few people pay one cent more, so the shares always add up to the total.
An even split is quick and fair when everyone ordered about the same.
When one person had a steak and another had a salad, switch to By what each person ordered. Each person pays for their own items plus their part of the tip.
Example: dinner for four
The bill is $120.00 and you leave an 18% tip. The tip is $21.60, so the total is $141.60. Split between four people, each person pays $35.40.
Now take a $100.00 bill with no tip, split three ways. $100.00 does not divide into three equal amounts of cents, so one person pays $33.34 and two people pay $33.33. Together that is exactly $100.00.
Questions people ask
How do you split a bill evenly?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. This calculator does both steps and deals with the leftover cents, so the shares always add up to the total.
How much should each person tip?
In the United States, 15% to 20% of the bill is usual for table service. In much of Europe, 5% to 10% or rounding up is common, and some bills already include a service charge. Check the receipt before you add a tip.
What if some people ordered more than others?
Switch to By what each person ordered. Add each item and tick who had it. Each person then pays for their own items plus their part of the tip.
Should the tip be worked out before or after tax?
Many people tip on the amount before tax, because tax is not part of the service. The tax and tip calculator lets you choose either way.
