          How the trip is settled

          1. Add everyone on the trip, then each expense and who paid for it.
          2. Untick anyone who was not part of an expense. They do not pay for it.
          3. The calculator compares what each person paid with their share, and turns the difference into as few payments as possible.
Ana the fox and Mira the rabbit each hand Rocco the raccoon a coin

The balances always add up to zero: what some people get back is exactly what the others owe. Paying the people who are owed the most first keeps the list short, never more payments than one fewer than the number of people.

Example: a weekend in a cabin

Rocco paid $480.00 for the cabin, Ana paid $96.00 for groceries and Luis paid $60.00 for fuel. Mira paid nothing. The weekend cost $636.00, so each of the four owes $159.00.

Rocco paid $321.00 more than his share, so he gets it back: Mira pays Rocco $159.00, Luis pays Rocco $99.00 and Ana pays Rocco $63.00. Three payments, and everyone is square.

          Questions people ask

How do you split trip costs between friends?

Write down every expense and who paid it. Work out each person's share and compare it with what they paid. People who paid more than their share get money back from the people who paid less.

What if not everyone joined an activity?

Untick the people who were not there for that expense. It is then split only between the people who took part.

How do you settle up with the fewest payments?

Match the person who owes the most with the person who is owed the most, settle as much as you can, and repeat. The calculator does this for you, so four friends never need more than three payments.

          Can I use different currencies?

This calculator uses one currency. The PayUpp app takes each expense in its own currency, locks the exchange rate on the day you paid, and settles the whole trip in one currency.

          Do I need an account?

Not for the calculator. To keep a running tab for a whole trip, start a free PayUpp group and invite your friends with a link.

Stop doing this math by hand.

PayUpp keeps every bill, tip and rent split in one place, and tells each friend what they owe. One group is free forever.
