How tax and tip are worked out
- Enter the subtotal: the bill before tax.
- Enter the sales tax rate. If your prices already include tax, leave it at 0.
- Pick a tip, and choose whether to tip on the amount before tax or after it.
An even split charges everyone the same share of the tax and the tip, whatever they ordered. So the friend who had a salad pays tip on the steak.
By what each person ordered fixes that. Each person pays for their own items, and the tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person ordered. The PayUpp app uses the same rule for every receipt.
Example: tax and tip on an $86.00 dinner
Rocco had a $32.00 steak and Luis had a $14.00 salad. Rocco and Ana shared a $28.00 bottle of wine, and all three shared $12.00 of nachos. The subtotal is $86.00.
With 8% tax ($6.88) and an 18% tip on the amount before tax ($15.48), the total is $108.36.
Split evenly, each person pays $36.12. Split by what each person ordered, Rocco pays $63.00, and Ana and Luis pay $22.68 each. Luis saves $13.44.
Questions people ask
How do you calculate tax and tip?
Multiply the subtotal by the tax rate to get the tax. Multiply the subtotal by the tip rate to get the tip, or the subtotal plus tax if you tip after tax. Add the three together for the total.
Should you tip on the amount before or after tax?
Etiquette guides usually say before tax, because tax is not part of the service. Tipping after tax costs a little more. Untick Tip on the amount before tax to see the difference.
What is a normal tip?
In the United States, 18% to 20% is common for table service, and 15% is the usual minimum. In many European countries, service is included, or a tip of 5% to 10% is plenty.
How do you split tax and tip fairly?
Share them in proportion to what each person ordered. If your food was a fifth of the bill, you pay a fifth of the tax and the tip. That is what By what each person ordered does.
What if the bill already has a service charge?
Then you usually do not need to tip again. Set the tip to 0%, or enter the service charge rate as the tip so it is shared in proportion too.
Is this the same math as the PayUpp app?
Yes. The calculator runs the same code as the app, so a receipt split here and a receipt split in PayUpp give the same numbers, to the cent.
